Unique Chrysler coupe has gone under the hammer at the cost of 858,000 dollars

The auction house RM Auctions has always been famous for the stunning lots and huge amounts of money made at each regular special event. That’s the last auction Vintage Cars of Meadow Brook which took place in Michigan became famous for an outstanding deal – two-door Chrysler known under the pseudonym of Thomas Special and which is one of only 18 existing copies, was sold at the price of 858,000 dollars.

In the early 50s the company under the leadership of Chrysler chief designer Virgil Exner headed for creating unusual and futuristic body, and this machine of 1953 model year became one of the first representatives of the new direction. Her body was designed by the Italian company Ghia – six cars were made by order of the American company and Italians made 12 more models for themselves.

Under huge sleek hood of the two-door New Yorker of 1953 model year there is a 180-horsepower V-shaped eight-cylinder Hemi engine which is combined to the automatic transmission. Although the car was named just Special, soon it received a nickname Thomas Special, because after the show this car was publicly presented to the head of the export department of the CB corporation which name is Thomas.
